The Alleghany Humane Society, Inc. was founded in September 1972.  In 1975, we designed our first logo which was a drawing of several animals n the palms of two caring hands and the motto, "Kindness Upliftss the World".  This became the Society's registered trademark.

Also in 1975, we adopted a spay/neuter program that requires that all pets adopted from the Alleghanhy Humane Society, Inc. must be spayed/neutered in order to slow down the birthrate of unwanted offspring.

For many years the Society's animals were housed and cared for in the homes of some of our members.  On November 3, 1980, thanks to the generous monetary gifts and untiring efforts of many generous, caring people, we opened our first animal shelter building.

Today, the Alleghany Humane Society, Inc. still operates with private donations and volunteer efforts, now assisted by surrounding government entities.  We have a small staff with volunteers augmenting the workforce.

The shelter houses mostly dogs and cats, but may occasionally rabbits, birds, or other animals may find a temporary home here.  In an attempt to insure that each pet adopted is going into a responsible and loving home, the Society reserves the right to make the final decision on all adoptions.

Please help us in our mission.  We need volunteers to work in almost every aspect of the Society's work.  We need people to undertake fun jobs, like socializing puppies and kittens and walking dogs as well as cleaning, answering the phone, helping with adoptions, creating displays about animals up for adoption, mowing grass, yardwork, fundraising, etc.  We also need money to pay for vet services, maintain the shelter building, etc.

Your tax-deductible contribution is greatly appreciated.  You may send checks payable to "The Alleghany Humane Society, Inc." and mailed to
